その根拠は、ジャズの全てのコード進行は元々その曲の美しいメロディを支えるために存在しており、メロディを知らずに即興をすることは、話題を知らずにスピーチをするようなものだからです。メロディの音符がどのコードトーンに乗っているかを分析することで、なぜそのコード進行が存在するのかが必然として理解でき、アドリブもメロディアスに開花します。The rationale is that all jazz chord progressions originally exist to support the beautiful melody. Improvising without knowing the melody is like giving a speech without knowing the topic. By analyzing how melody notes sit on top of chord tones, you naturally understand why the progression exists, and your improvisation blossoms melodically.
スタンダード曲を習得する最初のステップは、楽器を持つ前にメロディを声で歌えるようにすることです。楽譜やギタータブを見ながらではなく、録音を何度も聴いて耳でメロディを捉えましょう。ジャズの名人たちは、弾く前に心の中でメロディが鳴っている状態でギターを弾きます。メロディを歌えるということは、「曲が自分の中に入った」ことを意味し、それが自然なアドリブへの入口になります。The first step in learning a standard is to be able to sing the melody with your voice before picking up the instrument. Don't rely on sheet music or tab — listen to recordings repeatedly and capture the melody by ear. Jazz masters play with the melody already sounding in their head before their fingers move. Being able to sing the melody means 'the song has entered you', and that becomes the gateway to natural improvisation.

テーマを弾くポジションも工夫しましょう。同じメロディを指板の異なるポジションで弾くことで、フレットボードの把握が深まり、アドリブのレパートリーも広がります。フレット7〜12で弾いていたメロディをフレット2〜7でも弾けるようにする練習は、コードトーンの位置把握と同時進行で行うと効果的です。Also experiment with the position you play the theme in. Playing the same melody in different positions on the fretboard deepens fretboard knowledge and expands improvisation options. Practicing a melody you play in frets 7-12 also in frets 2-7 is most effective when done alongside learning chord tone positions.
テーマを完璧に弾けるようになったら、次はテーマを「ベース」にしてアドリブを発展させます。テーマの一部のリズムをずらす、テーマのメロディ音符を装飾音で彩る、テーマの骨格音（コードトーン）は維持しながら周辺の音を即興で変えるなど、少しずつ「テーマからの脱線」を試みます。このアプローチは「テーマを崩すアドリブ」として、多くのジャズミュージシャンが最も重視する即興の手法です。Once you can play the theme perfectly, use it as a 'base' to develop improvisation. Shift some of the theme's rhythm, decorate the theme's notes with ornaments, or keep the skeleton notes (chord tones) while improvising the surrounding notes — gradually attempt 'deviations from the theme'. This approach, 'improvisation that deconstructs the theme', is the improvisation method most valued by many jazz musicians.
